Bowers & Merena Auction The January 2011 Tampa Bay Rarities Sale Jan-2011 1861 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. MS-61 (NGC). This Civil War-era issue is a exceptionally elusive even by Three-Dollar gold standards. The business strike mintage is limited to 5,959 pieces, and survivors probably number fewer than 300 coins, the vast majority of which are circulated pieces in EF and AU. Strictly BU with suitably vibrant luster, the coin we offer here offers condition rarity as well as absolute scarcity. It is bathed in bright rose-gold color that is free of sizeable or otherwise individually distracting abrasions. An important offering for the advanced collector of 19th century United States gold.
