Stack's Bowers Auction March 2018 Baltimore U.S. Coins Auction Mar-2018 1861 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. MS-62+ (PCGS). Rare and attractive Mint State quality from a mintage of just 5,959 circulation strike three-dollar gold pieces bearing this date. Original honey-rose patina blends with soft satin luster, both sides also offering bold to sharp definition from the dies. Uncommonly smooth for the assigned grade, there is not much separating this premium quality example from a Choice Uncirculated grade. Of the 300 or so 1861 three-dollar gold coins believed extant, the vast majority are in circulated grades such as EF or AU. The present offering represents a fleeting bidding opportunity for the quality conscious collector specializing in this challenging 19th century gold series. Provenance: From the RSC Collection. PCGS Population: 1; 32 finer (MS-66+ finest). PCGS# 7982. NGC ID: 25MG. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
