Legend Rare Coin Auctions | Auction | The Regency Auction 57 | Feb-2023 | THE TERRA PISTACIA COLLECTION A fabulous GEM, among the FINEST KNOWN of this Judd number. Baily's Liberty head faces left with stars around. Her hair is tied in an intricate bun and wears a crown of leaves. The reverse is William Barber's Standing Eagle, holding a shield. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM above. Struck in silver, with a reeded edge. Considered to be Rarity-4. These were issued in six-piece Trade Dollar Pattern Proof Sets and likely distributed through well connected Philadelphia era coin dealers. A TOTALLY ORIGINAL PQ GEM! Extremely reflective mirrors are gently toned over with a dappled iridescent golden-gray patina with splashes of lilac and purple on the reverse. The surfaces are very clean, free of any distracting marks, lines, ticks, or any other kind of distraction. The eye appeal is wonderful. Ex Richard B. Winsor Collection, Chapman Brothers, December 1895, lot 1135 (part of a six-piece set, see following lots); J.M. Clapp Collection; Clapp Estate to Eliasberg, via Stack's in 1942; Louis E. Eliasberg Collection, Bowers & Merena, May 1996, lot 303. PCGS 2, NGC 0, CAC 3 (clearly an NGC example was crossed over and the CAC Population Report was not adjusted. No PCGS PR66 has ever sold in auction. A PCGS PR65 CAC sold in April 2018 for $14,400; the current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $21,000. A truly sensational example. Likely held together since time of issue, it is our hope this and the other 1873 Trade Dollar pattern lots stay together. Good luck. Cert. Number 4491583 PCGS # 61566 |
