|Stack's Bowers||Auction||August 2011 Chicago ANA World's Fair of Money Auction||Aug-2011||William Porter||1879-CC Liberty Half Eagle. Winter 1-A. AU-58 (PCGS). OGH. Lustrous deep orange gold with rich rose and sky blue iridescence in the fields and on the sharply rendered design motifs. From a mintage of 17,281 pieces, a fairly high production figure—though not the highest—among the Carson City half eagles of the era. The present coin invites close-in inspection and holds up admirably under low magnification. Among CC half eagles of the decade, the 1879-CC issue ranks among the more available dates, though "available" can seem misleading in relation to high-grade specimens. The PCGS Population Report may conceivably be skewed by resubmissions at the AU-58 level—the figure reported there, see below, seems a trifle on the high side in our opinion, especially when considering the paucity of Mint State coins. Be that as it may, if excellent eye appeal and smooth surfaces call to the collector in you, you won't be short-changed here.
Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers
A popular Carson City issue, attractive and quite affordable.
