Legend Rare Coin Auctions Auction The Regency Auction 30 Jan-2019 This is a really neat, collector quality, CHOICE AU example of this popular Carson City half eagle. Satiny surfaces show just some minor friction lines on the surfaces. The devices show only the slightest traces of weakness on the highest points of the design, but for the most part, the elements are crisp. A strong glass does reveal a few minor reeding marks that come naturally from use in commerce. For the date and grade, the eye appeal is nicer than usually encountered. Beginning in 1879, the mintages for Carson City gold coins began to increase, making this the first, in Doug Winter's words, "that is relatively easy to obtain, especially in lower grades...it is very scarce in higher circulated grades and extremely rare in full Mint State." Of the 17,281 initially struck, perhaps 200-250 exist in all grades, most in VF and XF. AU58s lie at the low end of the condition census, and their populations are likely inflated by regrades. PCGS 27, NGC 21. The most recent example to sell in auction was five and a half years ago, selling for $7,050 and the current PCGS value is listed at $8,250. Keep in mind that in AU58, we sold the Oak Crest coin for $16,450 in May 2018. These are RARE so fine and we anticipate strong bidding from the Carson City collector. Cert.
