Stack's Bowers Auction The June 2011 Baltimore Auction Jun-2011 1908-S Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. MS-63 (PCGS). 1920 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. MS-64 (PCGS). Secure Holder. Produced to the extent of just 22,000 pieces, the 1908-S can be a challenging double eagle to locate even in circulated grades. The fact that this is one of the few "Saints" offered more frequently in worn condition explains the even greater importance and desirability of Mint State survivors such as this impressive Choice Unc. With only moderately abraded surfaces and full, suitably vibrant mint frost, in fact, this coin represents the finest in technical quality that is realistically obtainable for the 1908-S as far as most collectors are concerned. Dominant khaki-orange surfaces, hints of pale-rose tinting are intermingled in isolated areas and not readily evident at all angles. Expectably sharp in strike for the issue, with no individually mentionable abrasions save for a faint obverse graze paralleling the bottom of Liberty's outstretched arm.
