Legend Rare Coin Auctions Auction The Regency Auction XXI May 2017 May-2017 A superb GEM example of this final year of Morgan dollar issue. Silver dollar production ended in 1904, and per the terms of the 1918 Pittman Act, old silver dollars in storage were to be melted down and new dollars struck. However, the old hubs had been destroyed in 1910, no one at the Treasury thinking that dollar coinage would resume. George Morgan and John Sinnock had to come up with a new hub, this one, is noticeably more shallow in detail than those struck 1878-1904. In general, these also do not come as nice as those issued earlier. The presently offered coin is a very rare exception to that generality. A brilliant mint frost shines on both sides, and the strike is decidedly bolder and more fully defined than normally seen. The Morgans of 1921, like the Peace dollars that came after, very rarely tone nicely. This one has dramatic roll-end toning on the obverse; shades of blue, violet, olive, tan, gold, russet, and silver blend over nearly perfectly smooth surfaces. The reverse shows a halo of olive, tan, and gold that rings the periphery. The eye appeal is superb! PCGS 14, NGC 11. There are NONE FINER at either service. The last one to sell in auction brought $11,750 in July 2015. The one before that sold for $15,863 in January 2014. The current PCGS value is listed at $16,500. Remember, this is as high a grade as they come, and the eye appeal is better than the vast majority of those graded 67. Even if you are the pickiest dollar buyer, you will fall in love with this coin! PCGS # 7296 Cert. Number 83560929 PCGS # 7296
