1652 Shilling Pine Tree, Monogrammed NE (Regular Strike)

The "Monogram NE" Pine Tree Shilling is an unusual variety which derives its nickname from the way in which the N and the E of NEW ENGLAND are connected. The cause of this odd connection is unknown but may be due to tight placement of the lettering on the reverse. This is a somewhat scarce variety and because it is considered its own type, it usually commands a premium over the most common varieties. At least eight Uncirculated examples are known, including one Gem. Early states of the reverse die show no breaks, but the die quickly deteriorates. In later states, coins of this variety will show a raised chunk of metal at GL of ENGLAND, and even later states show another chunk at OM of DOM.

This is a Large Planchet variety. Though some examples show light clipping, most of the observed high-grade examples weigh between 70 and 72.6 grains (72 grains is considered full weight for this variety).
