David Hall:

This is the unique copper striking of the famous 1792 silver half disme.

P. Scott Rubin: The 1792 Plain Edge Copper Half Disme (Judd-8) is a known by the unique specimen that has been graded anywhere from “strictly Uncirculated” to Very Fine. The first known appearance of this coin was in the Mason Sale of November 1878, which contained coins from the Joseph J. Mickley Collection.

Currently numismatists consider the 1792 Silver Half Disme a regular issue U.S. Coin and as such the first coin issued for circulation made by the United States Government. In that light, the unique 1792 Plain Edge Copper Half Disme is the trial piece for the first regular issue coinage of the United States. As a unique coin, being the only one known struck in copper not silver, its historical significance cannot be over stated.
