Ron Guth:

When you're engraving coin dies by hand, something is bound to go wrong. It could be the wrong date punch, a letter out of place, or, in this case, a missing fraction bar. Fortunately, only one of the many 1794 die varieties features this error, but that is a double-edged sword because this major variety is now on everyone's collecting radar. Because it is a "Redbook" variety, demand for the coin outstrips the available supply and the prices for the No Fraction Bar variety are higher than for a regular type coin.

For quality-conscious buyers, there are very few high-end examples, especially in Mint State. Only a single, Red-Brown example is known.
