Ron Guth:

In 1865, Mint employees produced only 500 Proof Half Dollars. These were normally minted in advance, not to order, thus it is unlikely that all 500 proofs were sold to collectors. Whatever the true number might be, a large majority of the original "500" has survived. PCGS alone has certified nearly half the total mintage. The typical grade on a Proof 1865 Half Dollar is average to slightly above-average, with the largest populations in PR63 and PR64. Most are brilliant, about a fourth are Cameos, and only a tiny handful are Deep Cameos. Gems are scarce but available; Superb examples at the PR67 level are true condition-rarities.
