Judd 1287 is a prototype coin for an 1873 Trade Dollar. The obverse features a head of Liberty facing right (a departure from the normal Seated Liberty design of the period); the reverse shows a wreath surrounding the denomination, weight and fineness. J-1287 was struck in what has been called White metal. Only two examples are known despite the four examples reported in the PCGS Population Report. Both of the known examples are defective to some degree - one has been bent and straightened, the other was struck on a planchet with lamination streaks and splits.
Saul Teichman wrote at www.uspatterns.com, "Many of these white metal trade dollars came from the Linderman collection and may have been deliberately struck for his personal cabinet."
