Ron Guth:

The obverse of Judd 1324 appears to be struck from the regular Trade Dollar obverse die of 1873, but there are numerous differences that, while minor, clearly indicate that a completely new die was used for the pattern coinage. The sea is closer to the rim, the ground extends to the right, Liberty's hair bounces up, almost as if she is wearing a hoodie, and the stem and leaves in her right hand (viewer's left) are more finely executed. The reverse features a smaller eagle than on the adopted design. Mint Engraver, William Barber, credited himself with the obverse design and called it the "Olive Branch."

Approximately a dozen of the copper J-1324's are known, the finest of which is the PR66RB example from the Simpson Collection.
