The 1867-S Quarter Dollar is semi-scarce in low grades and very rare in Mint State, making it an important condition-rarity in the series. The mintage of 48,000 hints at this rarity, but does not explain why the 1867-S is so much more difficult to locate than other dates such as the 1866-S (which has a much lower mintage). Most Mint State examples would be consider "low-end" because the majority are MS62 to MS63. However, there is one standout example -- an NGC MS67 1867-S Quarter that has been recognized as the finest example known of this date since all the way back to 1975.
