PCGS Set Registry Update

September 1, 1941, marked the second anniversary of World War II. During this time, metals such as copper and nickel became scarce commodities because they were used for munitions. Therefore, these metals that had been commonly employed for coinage were no longer used, and others were substituted. Iron was one of those alternative metals used to strike coins during the war. The symbol for iron on the periodic table of elements is "Fe," and in the Latin language this represents ferrum. Iron is a very durable metal and is combined with carbon to make steel. While iron is an exceptionally durable metal, it's extremely corrosive when water or humidity are present, and the surfaces will form rust. However, iron coins from Bulgaria that are dated 1941 and managed to survive in uncirculated condition are highly sought after by collectors. The 1941 5 Leva iron coin seen above is part of the Bulgarian Ruler Boris III Set, Circulation Strikes (1941). This set will be challenging to complete in uncirculated condition.
