Set Registry Spotlight

EBC - The Number One Finest Lincoln Proof Set 1950-Present
What makes a great Proof Lincoln set? Take a look at the EBC set and judge for yourself. Over half of the coins in this set are tied for the finest graded. And to make this set even sweeter, 78% are graded Deep Cameo. Let's not forget EBC's set with varieties. It's number one, too! Click here to enjoy.

Last week the judges asked for more time to review the sets before announcing the winners of the 2002 Set Registry Awards. It seems there are so many great sets that picking just five from each category has been a very difficult task. One judge commented that he wished we could have 100 winners instead of just 15. The award winners will be announced on the PCGS web site at the Set Registry Awards page this week, so stay tuned!

Previews of proposed weighting are posted on the Set Registry News page for at least a week prior to actually making the changes. This is allowing registrants time to review the changes and submit feedback. Currently for your review are the Franklin half dollars, Jefferson nickels, Buffalo nickels, and Kennedy half dollars. Indian cents, Walking Liberty half dollars, and Proof Sets 1936-2001 are coming up in the weighting queue. Vacations have slowed down the weighting process for the last three weeks, but we are gearing up to begin posting again. Your opinion counts, so please let us hear from you before we add weighting to the sets.

Numismatic News

The Great 2001-D Penny Spill
If you didn't hear about the big cent spill in Texas last October, you'll want to read this unusual story about how 7.6 million 2001-D Lincolns ended up in a roadside ditch. Just be warned: Lincoln collectors are likely to be disturbed by the high volume of mud, salt and vinegar involved. From The Coin Collector, issue 126. Click here to read more.

Collector's Survey
Collecting Proof Lincoln cents used to be considered a little on the esoteric side. In the 1960s there were frequent complaints such as: "They've always got spots on them" or "Sometimes I can't tell a Matte Proof from a circulation strike." The introduction of PCGS certification has increased the popularity tremendously. Which of these ways would you collect Proof Lincolns if you were on a tight budget?

  1. A set of Matte Proofs in the best condition I could afford. These are the most interesting and historic pieces of the entire Lincoln series.
  2. A type set with the 1909 V.D.B., another Matte Proof date, a "Wheat back" (1936-58) and a Memorial reverse. Full red Gems!
  3. The Proof issues from 1936 through 1942. These are probably the most popular dates of the series as they're also part of the beautiful 1936-42 proof sets. PR65RD all the way.
  4. The Proof issues from 1950-58. The last of the "Wheaties" from the fabulous fifties! PR66RD or better.
  5. The Memorial cents! This series is now over 40 years old and covers a great number of coins and a significant span of numismatic history.

Results from last survey: 33% would find it most fun and rewarding to focus on California Fractionals -- the "Cal gold" series of quarters, half dollars and dollars -- if collecting Territorial gold. Click here for a complete breakdown.

Our Readers Ask

Question: I have material which supposedly is helpful in distinguishing between the common 1970-S cent and those noted as Low 7 or Small Date. Yet, when I try to apply this information to actual coins, I am left with many "no decisions." Any help here beyond the usual placement of the number 7?

Answer: The placement of the numeral 7 is indeed the characteristic for this coin. What I use is when the 7 is level with the rest of the digits, then it is a Small Date. When the 7 dips below the level of the 9 and 0, then it is the Large Date.
