PCGS, Coin Market off to Strong Start in 2009!
By Jaime Hernandez, eCollector Editor

All of our staff members just returned from the Orlando FUN Show and let me tell you, things were busy both at the show and here at PCGS! The show was extremely successful for PCGS – we certified a lot of coins and we received plenty of traffic for our Sunnywood's Toned Morgan Dollar display, which will also be shown at next month's Long Beach Expo.

The FUN show was successful overall, with a lot of traffic and business being conducted. We would like to thank every one of you who stopped by the PCGS table, and thank all of our staff who did a wonderful job both at the show and here at the building.

This month, the long-anticipated 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle will be made available by the United States Mint. At PCGS, we were so excited about the resurrection of one of America's most beautiful coins that we decided to interview some of the world's most renowned numismatic experts and share their comments with you. We hope you enjoy the video, and we would also like to thank the experts who contributed to this project.

Finally, be sure to check out the article about the Ultra High Relief coin and Mike Sargent's counterfeit detection article featuring the 1795 Silver Dollar. Mike's counterfeit detection articles are proving to be quite popular with our readers. As always, be sure to check back to see if you won our special coin, and feel free to send us an e-mail or let us know how you are enjoying the new eCollector.

Saint Gaudens Ultra High Relief Coins Resurrected in 2009
By Jaime Hernandez

On January 22, 2009 the U.S. Mint will resurrect what many consider to be the most beautiful and captivating design in American coinage by introducing the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle coins.

The history of this modern-day masterpiece began in 1905 when President Theodore Roosevelt visited the Smithsonian Institute and became mesmerized by the display of beautiful ancient coins and their artistically compelling designs. Roosevelt felt that American coins were "artistically of atrocious hideousness" compared to other nations' coins. And he believed a nation's coins should reflect its greatness.

As a result, Roosevelt contracted world-renowned sculptor and artist Augustus Saint Gaudens. Roosevelt asked Saint Gaudens to beautify American coinage with new and appealing artistic designs.

Saint Gaudens responded by creating the dazzling 1907 Ultra High Relief design. However, this Ultra High Relief design proved to be extremely difficult to produce as it required multiple strikes to capture the coin's full high relief details. Consequently, the U.S. Mint only produced a small quantity of these coins. Today, there are only two known examples of the 1907 Ultra High Relief coins in existence.

In a few days, the Mint will allow the public to own similar examples of the Ultra High Relief masterpieces that were originally struck in 1907. Until recently, most collectors would have never imagined they could own an Ultra High Relief coin.

The obverse of the 2009 Ultra High Relief is absolutely breathtaking, just as on its 1907 counterpart! The obverse portrays a radiant and elegant Lady Liberty as she bravely strides into the dawn of a new day. In her right hand she holds an ignited torch, and in her left hand she holds an olive branch with leaves. The reverse portrays a majestic and artistically struck eagle with its large wings stretched out in flight. Behind the eagle are the sun and illuminating rays with the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" elegantly inscribed above the sun. Read More...

Altering the 1795 Draped Bust Silver Dollar
by Mike Sargent

Mike Sargent is the Head Verifier at PCGS and is a leading expert on counterfeit detection. "Sarge" maintains a comprehensive database of known counterfeits and unfortunately is frequently adding new ones.

Today, we are looking at a decent-quality counterfeit 1795 Draped Bust silver dollar. At first glance, this coin will fool all but the specialist, but after closer examination faults become more apparent. It also helps to have a genuine coin of the same type and era for a side-by-side comparison. The coin weighs in at a very accurate 26.90 grams compared to the genuine coin weight of 26.86 grams; an ideal weight for an uncirculated coin is 26.96 grams.

As we start examining the coin, we find minor variances from a genuine piece. The edge is a sure giveaway when you have a genuine coin to compare it to. The edge of the counterfeit coin is way too sharp, almost appearing to be shaven flat. You will also notice how shallow the letters are inset into the coin and how uneven the letters are as they wrap around the coin. Read More...
