The $3 gold piece was struck at four different mints, mostly in the first four years of the denomination's issue. During 1854 an extremely small quantity was struck at the Dahlongega mint in Georgia, making this unquestionably the toughest of the four coins to find. The New Orleans mint also struck some in 1854, and while certainly well above a common date, it is not terribly rare except in Mint State. San Francisco struck coins from 1855-1857 and again in 1860. Of these, the 1856-S is the most common, but is elusive in full Mint State. This is not a large set, but nearly impossible with a set rating above MS-60.
