Since the formation of the Swiss Confederation in 1848, they have been held by the Confederation in various cities. Coins (such as these in this series) and medals have been awarded to the marksmen. Usually about 50,000 marksmen attend the festivals. The festivals have been declared a factor of Swiss unity and direct democracy.
