The Republic of China was formed in 1912, ending thousands of years of imperial rule. The first Provisional President of the Republic was Sun Yat-Sen, whose image appears on several of the design types, including the popular Memento Dollars and the Sun Yat-sen memorial and mausoleum dollars. Another popular figure from the Republic was the military leader, Yuan Shih-kai, whose image appears on the “Fat Man” Dollars (Y-329) and on one of the “High Hat” Dollars (Y-322). This is a particularly challenging set because of the rarity of some of the design types and varieties. The popularity of Chinese coins has increased dramatically in recent years because of the desire of the emerging middle class in China to repatriate their numismatic history.
