Finas Joyce - Plus '+' Set
About This Set: Carson City Mint - Carson City (CC) was founded in 1858 and has been the Nevada state capital since statehood in 1864. A bill to create a Nevada mint was passed in 1863 but took years to finalize the location, finance and build the mint. The CC mint opened in 1870 and the first coins struck were liberty seated dollars. The CC mint then produced gold and silver coins of various denominations through 1893 but years 1886 through 1888 saw no production. In 1899 Carson City lost its mint status but remained an assay office until 1933. Shortly after that it became a Nevada state museum as it is today. One of the coins produced at the CC mint was the silver Morgan dollar. Minted from 1878 through 1885 and then 1889 through 1893, the CC Morgan dollar is a popular collector series. Also the CC dollars were distributed in GSA holders and some years the GSA contained a large percentage of the mintage. The GSA's are still available although many have been 'cracked out' and now exist as raw or slabbed coins.
