"Large" refers to the first 8 of the date. If you do not have another coin for comparison, here's a quick attribution guide: on the Small 8 variety, the first 8 is a script 8 (center bar of 8 is slanted downward to the right); on the Large 8 variety, the first 8 is a block 8 (center bar of 8 is flat).
