Barry Sunshine, a collector of California Fractional Gold coins and a student of the series, has this to say about the BG-103:

BG-103 is an octagonal quarter dollar that is considered a Rarity 8 with only 3 examples known to exist. Two of the examples that exist are in Mint State condition. BG-103 shares the same obverse as the BG-102 but has a different reverse. The reverse has an engraving blunder where the engraver left off the “R” in Dollar.  Therefore, the word “DOLLA” appears on the reverse. It is believed that the spelling error was discovered fter a few pieces were produced, then no more were made, thus accounting for its extreme rarity.
