Quarter Dollars with mintages of over a million coins were unheard of until 1853. In 1853 and 1854, the Philadelphia Mint killed the old mintage records by a mile. Both years boasted mintages of over 12 million coins, a monster effort. In 1853 and 1854, the New Orleans Mint contributed by producing over a million quarters in each of those years. The mintage of the 1854-O Quarter is only slightly higher than that of the 1853-O, but the 1854-O is much less expensive because of a larger supply in all grades.
Mint State examples of the 1854-O With Arrows Quarter are scarce, but not rare. The best example is a single PCGS MS66.
Be sure to check the mintmark on any 1854-O Quarter Dollar for the rare and elusive Huge O variety. The mintmark on this unusual variety is over-sized and misshapen, making it easy to distinguish.
