The 1869-S Half Dollar has a rather substantial mintage in the hundreds of thousands, but like most S-mint dates of the era, there are scant Mint State pieces. Of those that have survived, the quality is fair to middling, with most falling into the MS63 to MS64 range. Gems are extremely rare, despite the existence of a couple of Superb examples. The strike quality of this date is an issue, as many examples have poor definition on some of the stars and they may also show weakness on the reverse scroll at IN GOD.
