The 1986-P Statue of Liberty Silver Dollar was produced in order to commemorate the Statue of Liberty, which is located in New York.

Obverse: The obverse features the Statue of Liberty, behind her the Ellis Island building is also visible in the background. The obverse has the inscriptions, “Liberty Ellis Island, Gateway to America, In God We Trust, and finally it also has the D mint mark indicating it was struck at the Denver Mint.

Reverse: The reverse of the coin features a hand holding a lit torch along with rectangular rays shining from the flame. The reverse has the inscriptions, “United States of America, Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor, Your Huddled Masses Yearning to Breathe Free, E Pluribus Unum and One Dollar.”

History: The Statue of Liberty sits on a 12 acre island in New York. It stands over 300 ft. tall from the ground up. Most significantly, for many years it has been the first glimpse of the United States for many immigrants have arrived to the U.S. by ship.

Furthermore, the Statue of Liberty Silver Dollar is a significant coin as it reminds us of the relationship between both France and the United States. On October 28, of 1886, France presented the Statue of Liberty to the U.S. in order to celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence and to commemorate the bond and friendship between both countries.

Issue Price: The clad 1986-P Statue of Liberty Commemorative Dollar was sold directly by the U.S Mint at a pre issue price of $20.50 for each coin. The regular issue price was then set at $22.00 for each coin.

The Mint also offered a 1986 Proof Silver Dollar version of this same design. Proof Silver Dollars were stuck at the San Francisco Mint.

The Mint also offered a gold 1986 $5 proof and uncirculated version of this design. Both proof and uncirculated coins were struck at the West Point Minting Facility.
