To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Statue of Liberty, the U.S. Mint produced commemorative Half Dollars, Silver Dollars, and Half Eagles ($5 gold pieces) with special designs inspired by the famous icon.  The Half Eagle was the first such coin of the $5 denomination since 1929.  The obverse features a close-up of the Statue's head; the reverse shows an eagle about to land.  Both Mint State and Proof versions were sold to collectors at a premium over their gold value.  All of the Statue of Liberty Half Eagles were struck at West Point, another first for the denomination.
