BG-221 is an undated Quarter Dollar issued during what is known as Period One (1852-1857) of the California Pioneer Fractional Gold.  According to the Breen-Gillio reference, the firm of Antoine Louis Nouizillet coined this variety in 1853.  This variety is considered scarce, but it is readily available in most grades up through MS64.  A single example found on the wreck of the S.S. Central America was certified as MS62 by PCGS.
