Ever since 1993, Rusty Goe has searched dealer inventories, auctions, coin shows, and private collections on my behalf. Strict requirements resulted in the rejection of many of the specimens that were offered to Goe. It was his goal to assemble for me a matching set with all of the coins being snow white (or as close as possible) and fully struck. No borderline Full Heads were allowed, and every coin was required to be high-end for the assigned grade.
If a better example of a coin in the set was found it would replace the existing coin. Any of the coins that were replaced were quickly purchased by other collectors who were dazzled by the quality. The set has been resubmitted to PCGS for regrading on occasion. So far, I have received 14 upgrades.
Right now this set is safely stored in a bank vault. I take it out from time to time for pure enjoyment. When the set is in the vault, I have a large image of it framed in a wall hanging in my study.
I have other sets of wonderful coins—a high-grade Carson City Morgan silver dollar set, for one. But my set of Standing Liberty quarters transcends them all.
