Proof mintages for 1880 hit a high point with 1,355 of the major silver denominations minted. Base metal issues totaled nearly 4,000 pieces. Consequently, the Proof Set for 1880 is comparatively easy to complete, given that any set requiring Proof Morgan and Trade Dollars is never trivial. Including gold immediately puts any 19th century Proof set into the "challenging" category. Mint records show that only 36 of each of the gold denominations were minted this year, and survival rates range from two dozen of the lower denominations down to only one dozen of the higher denominations, finding the six required coins will take both time and money.
