About This Set: The Hesselgesser Bust Dollar Collection is historically significant in that the quality of these first silver dollars struck by the U.S. Mint is amazing. The current collection contains 113 of the known 123 varieties, many of which are the finest known. This is notable because the Bowers-Borchardt variety series for early U.S. dollars is difficult to obtain in grades of Extremely Fine or higher. The complete set of 123 coins contains 9 R8's and at least 7 R7's coins not to mention numerous R6's, a truly lifetime challenge! The Hesselgesser Collection has 79 coins in About Uncirculated grade (26 AU58, 28 AU55, 17 AU53, &8 AU50 coins) and 17 MS coins(5 MS61, 8 MS62, 2 MS63, &2 MS64) for a total of 96 out of 113 varieties in AU or higher grades. An amazing 100 coins qualify as condition census according to the Bowers-Borckardt Encyclopedia of Silver Dollar book or more recent references. The originality of these coins is remarkable in toning, luster and overall eye appeal while adjustment marks are kept to a minimal. The remaining varieties left to be found include 7 R8's and 2 high R7's. Two coins I have most recently added are the B-13, BB-24 (the finest known in PCGSMS62) and a VF-EF N94 B-3, BB-183. The easy one left to find is a B-7, BB-18 no plug, an R4 coin difficult to find problem free. The remaining 10 include 7 R-8's (five of which have only one known coin) and 2 R-7's. I will have my work cut out for me. Only Warren Miller owns all five of these, one known, varieties in his amazing completed set (using the 118 coin set - No Plugs) of Early Dollars. I hope all of you enjoy this unique set as much I have in enjoyed finding them!
