Ten Most Famous United States Ultra Rarities
This "Dream Team" of United States coins includes ten of the most famous American Rarities. Sure, they’re all ultra-rare and ultra-expensive, but every one of these coins is collectible. They show up infrequently and they usually set record prices when they do, but in any given year, collectors will have an opportunity to acquire one or more of these rarities. Talk about the ultimate bragging rights – only one person, Louis Eliasberg, has ever completed this set. Others (the Norweb family, Adolphe Menjou, and Will Neil) have come close but, as they say, close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. Even America’s own National Numismatic Collection is missing four of these rarities! Here are the ten coins that make up this spine-tingling set:
1913 Liberty Head Nickel – five known.
1894-S Barber Dime – eleven known.
1876-CC Twenty Cent Piece – less than 20 known.
1838-O Half Dollar – about a dozen known.
1804 Bust Dollar – eight Originals, seven Restrikes.
1870-S Seated Liberty Dollar – nine known.
1885 Trade Dollar – five known.
Coiled Hair "Stella" (1879 or 1880) – 10-12 known of each.
1907 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle – 20 known.
1927-D $20 – just over a dozen known.
Notes: This set has bonuses. Please see the Set Composition for a listing.
