Liberty Head $2-1/2 Gold, Proof (1840-1858)
The $2½ Liberty was introduced in 1840 from a design by Christian Gobrecht. Proofs were struck in extremely limited quantities in the early years, with most of the mintages being less than ten pieces per year. The 1841 date was struck only in Proof, with no examples minted for circulation. Obtaining even a single piece from this era is a numismatic accomplishment and a complete set will make you into a numismatic immortal.
