The American Gold Eagle series began in 1986 and features the timeless design of Augustus Saint-Gaudens on the obverse, with a reverse design by Miley Busiek. Struck in four denominations in 22 karat (.917 pure) gold, they remain one of the world's most popular bullion issues. Proof 1/2 ounce ($25) coins were first struck in 1987 in Philadelphia, and in 1994, production was taken over by the facility at West Point. Proofs quality has been uniformly high, so populations in the top grades are far higher than for their Circulation strike counterparts.
