Queen Anne’s Coronation took place in 1702, and this silver medal was struck to commemorate this event. The obverse shows the bust of Queen Anne. The reverse shows Queen Anne as Pallas Athene fighting a four-armed two-headed monster (possibly the Hydra) that is holding a club [the serpents are the Hydra element] The monster is a symbolic representation of Britain's enemies, particularly France during the War of the Spanish Succession. The medallist was John Croker, a German engraver who worked at a number of mints around England as well as the mint in the Tower of London. He designed a number of coins for William III and Queen Mary and was Chief Engraver to the Royal Mint from 1705 until his death in 1741. It is reported that the scientist Sir Isaac Newton contributed to the design as Newton and Croker were known to work closely together.
