The Basic Dollar set includes the mintmarked issues, and compared to the date set, is a whole new ballgame. It naturally introduces some major rarities from both the San Francisco and Carson City mints. Standing far above the rest, is the mysterious 1870-S, for which no official mint records even exist. While the original mintage is unknown, the dozen survivors are all that really matter today. Also looming large are the first "CC" issues from the early 1870s. Of course, most people know of the 1893-S Morgan Dollar, and a high grade example of this rarity will not be cheap. And of course, one still needs the 1794 for this set. So, aside from the 1870-S most of these coins can be found (albeit sometimes at a hefty price) and the nearly complete set will undeniably be a great source of pride and pleasure for the owner.
