Virginia with Major Varieties (1773-1774)

The Virginia Halfpenny is highly regarded as one of the few Colonial coins that is relatively easy and inexpensive to obtain in Uncirculated condition. This set includes the two varieties of the Halfpenny, plus the "Penny" and the "Shilling." The Penny is a copper piece, struck on a full-sized planchet using a design that is nearly identical to that of the Halfpenny. The Shilling was struck in silver and may have been a pattern for another denomination. Both the Penny and the Shilling are Proof-only issues and both are very rare and valuable. The Halfpennies would have circulated in America just at the onset of the Revolutionary War and we can imagine the revulsion of the colonists at the sight of their enemy’s portrait on their pocket-change! Today, all is forgotten and Americans (at least, American coin collectors) love King George.
