These are an unusual mix of imitation British copper coins made by a variety of private minters, known collectively as Machin’s Mills. These were underweight coppers made to look like British coins in order to encourage their circulation. Several of them are tied to other series (Vermont, Connecticut, and New York coppers) by shared dies, enhancing their popularity with collectors. Low-grade examples are relatively easy to obtain, but high-grade examples on nice, problem-free planchets are truly rare. Our basic set consists of one coin from each date known to exist. The "key" dates are 1747, 1776 (a popular Revolutionary War date), and 1784.
