The Fugio Cent, struck only in 1787, was one of the most historic and important issues of the Colonial period. They were the first coins issued under the authority of the United States, a full two years before the U.S. Constitution was ratified. Interestingly, much of the copper that was to have been made into Fugio Cents was illegally converted and manufactured into Connecticut Copper coins. Even so, sufficient quantities of the Fugio Cents exist to make them an accessible series. Nevertheless, there are some rare varieties in this set: the AMERICAN CONGRESS reverse, the FUCIO misspelling, and variants on the placement of the words UNITED and STATES (on the reverse). We’ve even included the later restrikes, of which only two are known in gold.
