The American Gold Eagle series began in 1986 and features the timeless design of Augustus Saint-Gaudens on the obverse, with a reverse design by Miley Busiek. Struck in four denominations in 22 karat (.917 pure) gold, they remain one of the world's most popular bullion issues. The complete set of Circulation Strikes and Proofs, plus First Strikes™, is a very large set, with over 330 coins. Containing 160 ounces of gold, melt value alone for this set approaches $200,000. It is not surprising therefore, that no Set Registry participants thus far have managed to complete this set.
