New Orleans Major Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1838-1909)

The New Orleans mint was one of the three original branch mints opened in 1838 and the only one to strike silver coins as well as gold coins. Despite its closure for 17 years surrounding the events and aftermath of the Civil War, the mint remained in operation through 1909 by which point the mint in Denver was fully operational. This set features one major "stopper": that being the extremely rare 1879-O With Motto Double Eagle, which boasts a tiny mintage of only 2,325 pieces. Over a third of the coins in this set were struck in only one year by the New Orleans mint, making its completion a challenge for any serious numismatist.
