The minor base metal coins make the 1877 set tougher than usual for the era. The cent is a key date, and worth considerably more than a typical Proof cent from the period. The three and five cent nickels are both Proof-only issues, and likewise carry significant premiums. The silver (though the mintage of 510 pieces is a bit lower than usual) is of average value for the period. As expected, the gold is rare, almost prohibitively so. Original mintage was only 20 pieces of each, of which perhaps around half survive. As of this writing, a PCGS certified Proof 1877 Eagle, or Double Eagle has not appeared at auction in over 15 years.
