The Quarter Eagle or $2.50 Gold Piece was originally the United States' smallest gold coin. Originally struck in 1796 (both with and without stars on the obverse) it continued in production with some regularity through 1929. While the Basic set has some extreme rarities (such as the 1854-S to name but one) the Date Set avoids most of the really impossible issues. Make no mistake, there are still some very tough dates such as the 1796 & 1797, the one-year type of 1808, the low mintage 1826 and the circulation strike 1864, made only in Philadelphia. As of this writing, no current collection is much over 50% complete, opening up a great opportunity to make your mark on the Set Registry.
