1878 Mint Set with Gold

The Mint Set for 1878 marked the debut of one of American's most famous coins, the Morgan Dollar. Because millions were saved at the Treasury and released nearly 100 years after their striking, many are plentiful today in Mint State and hence extremely popular with collectors. A modification to the does resulted in several tailfeather varieties on the 1878-P Morgan, so altogether there are five different Morgans needed for this set. None though, are rare. 1878 also marked the last year the Trade Dollar was struck for circulation, and not surprisingly, the "CC" mint issue is fairly scarce, especially in Mint State. Finally, 1878 would also mark the last year of quantity production of Quarters and Halves, as after 1878, most silver bullion would be consumed by Silver Dollar production until 1891. Thirteen different gold coins were made this year and not surprisingly, it is the "CC" issues that provide the main challenge. Neither the Half Eagle nor the Eagle from that mint has ever received a Mint State certification from PCGS and the Double Eagle is known by only a small handful of MS pieces.
