The short-lived $3.00 gold piece was a solution in search of a problem – that is, how to facilitate the purchase of a sheet of one hundred 3¢ stamps; then the current rate for a letter. Despite the good intentions of the Congress, the public thought otherwise, and the $3.00 faced low public demand and limited mintage throughout its 35-year life. While Harry Bass nearly completed this set (with the exception of the Proof 1855-S) it is unlikely anyone ever will come that close again anytime soon, as the unique 1870-S remains in the Bass Foundation Collection.
