The 1868 Mint set is a fairly small set. With New Orleans still shuttered from the Civil War, and Carson City not set to open till the following year, just two mints were in operation. Philadelphia struck all minor coins (Cent, Two Cent, Three Cent Nickel, Three Cent Silver, and the Nickel Five Cent piece) while the silver coins (Half Dime, Dime, Quarter, and Half) were struck at both San Francisco and Philadelphia. Dollars were made only in Philadelphia. All gold from this period is tough, particularly in high grade. Some, such as as the 1868-S Eagle are virtually unknown in Mint State.
