The ten-piece 1868 Proof Set contains no unusually rare dates. All are of average rarity for the period, and the mintage of 600 pieces is also typical. Currently, the Set Registry is topped by the midsouthcoin set, with an incredible set rating of 67.8. It epitomizes what the Registry is all about, eclipsing the holdings of such legendary collections as Pittman, Norweb, Garrett and Dunham. Twenty-five Proof gold sets were made in 1868, of which less than half of the larger denominations have survived. Even though prices for top quality of the higher denominations easily reach six figures, patience is required as they appear infrequently at best. In fact, a Double Eagle has not been offered at auction for eight years now.
