San Francisco Gold $20 Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1854-1930)

The San Francisco Double Eagles are a bit of a switch from the smaller denominations. With these, the early dates and Civil War era coins are not generally the stoppers. It's the late dates during the St. Gaudens coinage that will cause the bank account some pain. Topping the list (like the Eagles) will be the 1920-S and 1930-S, both of which were victims of heavy melting after the Gold Act of 1933. Additionally, the 1927-S, while not the ultra rarity of its Denver counterpart still commands five figures in any grade. The only San Francisco $20 Liberty that is likely to present a challenge is the 1866-S No Motto, and that is largely a condition rarity being quite rare in Mint State. XF's are available for a modest low five-figure price.
