Liberty Head $20 Gold Mintmark Set, Circulation Strikes (1850-1907)

Like the $10 Gold piece, $20 Gold pieces were not struck at the two early southeastern mints at Charlotte and Dahlonega, leaving only five coins in the Mintmark Set of Double Eagles. Unlike the smaller denomination gold coins, the Carson City mint issues here will not be the major challenge, since mintages in most years after 1870 were adequate. It's the New Orleans mint that will provide the most difficulty, as mintage was suspended after 1861, and resumed for only one year after the Civil War (1879) with a tiny run of only 2,325 pieces. All the New Orleans issues are very scarce in mint state and quite impossible above MS-63. The Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco coins are all widely available.
