The last Mint Set of the 1800s was typical of the period, with the base metal coins (cent and nickel) struck in Philadelphia and the silver coins struck at the three main mints at Philadelphia, San Francisco and New Orleans. While there are no significant rarities in this set, the mintmarked Barber coins grow somewhat scarce in the top grades. The inclusion of gold to the 1899 Mint set brings an additional eight coins, in four denominations. Scarcest is the 1899-O $10, which by virtue of its low mintage, is quite rare in high grade. In fact, only one piece as been graded above MS-64, that being the incredible Clapp-Eliasberg specimen graded MS68+!
